Fiat On-Ramps Compared: Wire vs ACH vs SEPA to USDC and USDT

The on-ramp decision matters more than the chain
Most people obsess over which blockchain to use for USDC transfers and then lose 3% and three days on the bank side of the flow. The fiat on-ramp — how money leaves your bank and enters the crypto rail — is where most cost and delay lives.
The five rails compared
Wire transfer (USD)
- Speed: same day domestic, 1–5 days international (SWIFT)
- Cost: $0–25 domestic, $15–50 international
- Best for: amounts over $25,000
- Downside: international wires have unpredictable correspondent fees
ACH (USD)
- Speed: 1–3 business days; Same-Day ACH by 5pm
- Cost: usually free
- Best for: amounts under $25,000
- Downside: can fail or reverse, which on-ramps hate
SEPA / SEPA Instant (EUR)
- Speed: standard SEPA 1 business day; SEPA Instant < 10 seconds
- Cost: standard free; Instant < €0.01
- Best for: any EUR amount, especially < €100,000
- Downside: not all banks support SEPA Instant yet
SPEI (MXN)
- Speed: seconds, 24/7
- Cost: ~MXN 5–10
- Best for: Mexico peso flows
- Downside: only MXN
UK Faster Payments (GBP)
- Speed: < 10 seconds, 24/7
- Cost: free for most consumer accounts
- Best for: GBP amounts up to £25,000–1M depending on bank
- Downside: per-transaction limits vary by bank
Decision table
- Small USD (<$25k) → ACH Same-Day
- Large USD (>$25k) → Domestic wire
- Any EUR → SEPA Instant if available, else standard SEPA
- GBP → Faster Payments
- MXN → SPEI
- Cross-region large amounts → wire, and accept the cost
Hidden costs to watch
- FX spread: if your bank converts currency before sending, you can lose 1–3%.
- Correspondent bank fees: international wires often lose $15–30 to intermediary banks you never see.
- On-ramp conversion fee: the stablecoin provider charges 0.05–0.5% to convert fiat → USDC.
- Reversal risk: ACH can reverse; on-ramps hold funds longer for that reason.
The professional setup
Match the rail to the currency and amount, send in the native currency of the on-ramp (no bank-side FX), and convert to USDC at the provider. On 1TCH this is one screen: choose the rail, enter the amount, and the funds land as USDB ready to pay out as USDC.
