ACH vs Wire vs SEPA: which payment rail should you use?
Why your choice of payment rail matters
Sending money isn't one-size-fits-all. The rail you choose — Wire, ACH, or SEPA — determines how fast your payment arrives, how much it costs, and which currencies and regions it supports. Pick the wrong one and you'll either overpay, wait too long, or discover your recipient can't receive the funds at all.
1TCH supports all three rails (plus SPEI for Mexico and UK Faster Payments), so you can match the rail to the need. Here's how to decide.
Wire transfers — fast, high-value, irrevocable
Wire transfers are same-day USD payments settled through the Federal Reserve's Fedwire system. They're ideal for large amounts where speed matters more than cost.
- Speed: Same-day settlement, often within hours.
- Cost: $20–35 per transfer (sender-side), plus potential receiving fees.
- Best for: Real estate closings, large B2B invoices, time-sensitive payments.
- Drawback: Irrevocable — once sent, a wire can't be reversed. And the cost makes wires impractical for small amounts.
ACH — cheap, reliable, US-only
ACH (Automated Clearing House) is the low-cost US bank rail. It's slower than wire but dramatically cheaper, making it the default for recurring payments and payroll.
- Speed: 1–2 business days (same-day ACH is available but limited).
- Cost: Usually free or under $1 per transfer.
- Best for: Payroll, recurring bills, vendor payments under $25,000.
- Drawback: US-only. Not suitable for urgent payments.
SEPA — the European standard
SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is the euro-denominated rail for EU/EEA countries. It settles within one business day and costs roughly the same as a domestic transfer.
- Speed: 1 business day (SEPA Instant can settle in seconds).
- Cost: Typically €0–1.
- Best for: Euro payments across 36 SEPA countries.
- Drawback: Euro-only. Not available outside the SEPA zone.
